Tahiti Time (TAHT)

UTC offset: -10:00
IANA identifier: Pacific/Tahiti
Abbreviation: TAHT
Population: approximately 280,000 (Society Islands and Tuamotus)
DST observed: No

Tahiti Time covers the bulk of French Polynesia: the Society Islands (Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora, Huahine, Raiatea), the Tuamotu Archipelago, and the Austral Islands. The offset is ten hours behind UTC, fixed year-round. No daylight saving. The Marquesas Islands (+09:30) and the Gambier Islands (-09:00) use separate offsets, so French Polynesia actually spans three time zones.

The offset matches Hawaii exactly. When it's noon in Honolulu, it's noon in Papeete. Despite being thousands of kilometers apart with no political connection, this alignment means direct flights between Hawaii and Tahiti involve zero time change.

Papeete

The capital (~27,000 in the city, ~130,000 in greater Papeete) on Tahiti's northwest coast. It's the commercial, administrative, and transportation hub for all of French Polynesia. The waterfront features the Vai'ete Square food trucks (roulottes) that serve at night. The market (Marche de Papeete) sells tropical fruits, flowers, vanilla, and black pearls. Air Tahiti Nui operates international flights to Los Angeles, Paris (via LAX or Auckland), Tokyo, and Auckland.

Papeete feels more French than Polynesian at first glance: baguettes, pharmacies, French bureaucracy. But the Polynesian culture runs deep underneath.

Bora Bora

The tourism icon. A volcanic island surrounded by a barrier reef and shallow lagoon with colors that have become the global benchmark for "tropical paradise." Luxury resorts with overwater bungalows charge $1,000+ per night. The overwater bungalow concept was invented here in the 1960s (by a trio of American investors who wanted to offer over-lagoon views to tourists).

Mount Otemanu (727m) provides the iconic backdrop. The lagoon offers snorkeling with manta rays and reef sharks. It's the honeymoon destination of choice for anyone who's seen a travel magazine.

Moorea

A 30-minute ferry from Tahiti, Moorea is the more accessible (and affordable) alternative to Bora Bora. Two dramatic bays (Cook's Bay and Opunohu Bay) cut into the volcanic interior. Pineapple plantations, hiking trails, and smaller resorts provide a quieter experience.

Teahupoo

On Tahiti's south coast, Teahupoo produces one of the world's heaviest and most dangerous surf waves. The wave breaks over a shallow reef, creating thick, barreling tubes that have become the test piece for professional big-wave surfers. Teahupoo hosted the surfing events at the 2024 Paris Olympics, the only competition venue located outside France (well, technically it's in France, but 15,000 km from Paris).

Black Pearls

French Polynesia (primarily the Tuamotu atolls) produces most of the world's cultured black pearls (Tahitian pearls). The black-lipped oyster (Pinctada margaritifera) is farmed in atoll lagoons. Pearls range from silver-grey to deep black with peacock-green overtones. The industry employs thousands and generates significant export revenue, though it has faced price pressure from oversupply.

Culture

French Polynesian culture is a blend of Maohi (indigenous Polynesian) and French traditions. Key elements:

  • Heiva i Tahiti (July): the country's largest cultural festival featuring competitive traditional dance (ori Tahiti), drumming, canoe races, and stone-lifting competitions
  • Tattooing: Polynesian tatau culture is experiencing global revival; Tahiti is a pilgrimage destination for tattoo enthusiasts
  • Va'a (outrigger canoe): competitive paddling is the most popular sport
  • Language: Tahitian (Reo Maohi) and French are both official

Economy

Tourism dominates (about 300,000 visitors per year pre-COVID). Black pearl exports, fishing, copra, and French government transfers (military/civil service salaries, social benefits) comprise the rest. French Polynesia uses the CFP franc (pegged to the euro). Cost of living is high.

Scheduling

At UTC-10:00:

  • Hawaii: same time
  • US West Coast (PST, -08:00): 2 hours ahead
  • Paris (CET, +01:00): 11 hours ahead
  • Paris (CEST, +02:00): 12 hours ahead
  • New Zealand (NZST, +12:00): 22 hours ahead (effectively 2 hours behind, next day)
  • Cook Islands: same time

The Paris gap is painful for administration. Papeete's morning overlaps with Paris's evening/night. Government coordination requires either very early or very late hours for someone.
